SALISBURY, Md.- Salisbury Mayor James Ireton Jr. on Tuesday announced Acting Salisbury Fire Chief Richard A. Hoppes as his pick for chief of the department. Ireton said he will place Hoppes' name in front of the City Council on Jan. 21.

Hoppes began his career with the Salisbury Fire Department as a volunteer in 1985, until he began his career service with the department in 1988. He has held many operational and administrative positions during his career, including lieutenant and training officer, captain, assistant fire chief, deputy fire chief and acting fire chief, having been appointed to that position twice.

Earlier this week, on Monday, Ireton announced the resignation of Fire Chief Jeffrey Simpson, who had served as chief since November 2010. It was also announced that Hoppes would assume the role of acting chief.
