DOVER, Del. (AP)- The Republican minority leader in the state House will not seek re-election, but plans to run for a state Senate seat instead.
Rep. Greg Lavelle of Wilmington announced his intentions to fellow lawmakers Tuesday on the opening day of this year's legislative session.
Lavelle's decision comes after Democrats who control both chambers of the General Assembly drafted a redistricting plan last year that left him in the same district as fellow House Republican Deborah Hudson.
Lavelle now has his sights set on unseating Democrat Michael Katz of Centerville, who currently represents the 4th Senate district.
Lavelle had told constituents in an email last fall that he would not be running for a House seat again. He plans to make a formal Senate campaign announcement in late spring or early summer.
