BOWERS BEACH, Del. (WBOC/AP)- The Delaware State Fire Marshal's office is investigating a weekend fire that engulfed a two-story house near Bowers Beach.
Bowers Beach Fire Company Deputy Chief Jeff Morris said heavy fire was showing from the home, located on the 1700 block of Bowers Beach Road north of Frederica, when fire crews arrived about 11:40 a.m. Sunday.
Morris said a man who lives at the home escaped before firefighters arrived. Authorities said one cat died in the fire, but firefighters rescued another. A turtle, ferret and fish also survived the fire.
Firefighters fought the blaze for more than hour before bringing it under control.
Authorities said the fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damage to the home. The Red Cross is assisting the displaced family of five.
