DSU to Visit Gardner-Webb in Bracketbuster

Posted:

Greensboro, N.C. (Jan. 30, 2012) --- The Delaware State University men's basketball team will take on Gardner-Webb University of the Big South Conference in the Tenth Annual Sears ESPN Bracketbusters on Saturday, Feb. 18 in Boiling Springs, N.C.  Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. at Gardner-Webb's Paul Porter Arena.

"BracketBusters" is an ESPN-created event due to the success of participating teams from "non-power" conferences in NCAA Tournament play through the years. The event provides programs with an opportunity to play top non-conference opponents roughly three weeks before the NCAA Tournament Selection Sunday. The three-day event will feature more than 100 potential NCAA Tournament hopefuls from a total of 14 conferences.

This will be the first meeting between the Hornets and Runnin' Bulldogs.

Gardner-Webb is 10-13 overall, including 7-2 at home, and 5-6 in the Big South as of Jan. 30.  The Runnin' Bulldogs are 1-2 vs. Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams this season. GWU has split two games with the MEAC's South Carolina this season, dropping a Nov. 19 contest 73-68 and winning 87-57 on Dec. 10. The Bulldogs lost to MEAC member Savannah State 72-66 on Nov. 26.

Max Landis (fr., 6-1) is Gardner-Webb's scoring leader at 11.3 points per game. He also has a team-high 50 three-point field goals (50-143). Tashan Newsome (jr., 6-3) averages 10.9 points and a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game, while Jason Dawson contributes 10.1 points per contest.

This will be Delaware State's second Bracketbusters appearance. The Hornets fell to Tennessee State 78-63 on the road in last year's event.
