Md. Lawmakers to Consider Talbot County Athletic Bills

Posted:

ST. MICHAELS, Md. - A group of concerned parents and citizens from St. Michaels in Talbot County will meet in Annapolis on Thursday. They will be voicing their support for two state bills that would allow St. Michaels High School students to play sports at Easton High School if the sport was not offered at St. Michaels.

As it stands now, St. Michaels students only have 10 athletic programs to chose from. Absent from the list are football, girl's soccer and men and women's lacrosse. Ginger Louis plays lacrosse and is a student at St. Michaels Middle School. She hopes these bills get passed before she enters the high school.

"I want the opportunity that they have because it means a lot to me to play this sport and I can get a scholarship for what I love to do," said Louis.

Parents of St. Michael's children are trying to give their children the same opportunities the Easton students have.

"It's very possible that if my son is unable to play football in school then we may end up moving out of the county," said Hollie Craig.

The St. Michaels men's soccer team currently has a female on their roster. Mimi Holt's daughter will do anything to play the sport she loves, including playing on a men's team.

"Going into the nineth grade, rec team [sports]were no longer an option anymore and so it was either play on the boy's team or quit soccer. She wouldn't quit or do anything else, she wants to play soccer," Holt said.

Not everyone is on board with these bills. Randy Bachand think this could be unfair to Easton High School students.

"It seems to me if the St. Michaels kids come to Easton, they are going to displace the Easton kids.," Bachand said.

In the past, Easton officials have raised concerns that by combining students, it could form a "super team."
