PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The Somerset County Board of Education has decided to hold off at least another year on acting on a proposal to merge Crisfield and Washington high schools. At a Feb. 2 public meeting, the board decided to hire a committee to reevaluate the situation before any further action is taken.
That proposed merger would mean the 10th to 12th grade students at Crisfield and Washington high schools would have been sent to Somerset Intermediate School in Westover,. The sixth through ninth grade students would be split between the two former high schools.
Malika James of Princess Anne said the decision to wait was a good idea.
"We really need to sit down as a community and decide what's best for our children," she said. "In that year's time it gives us time to reevaluate each child to see where they are academically, and be able to put a plan into action that's going to work and be effective for our children in Somerset County."
Crisfield High School and Washington High School in Princess Anne are the only public high schools in Somerset County. Both been flagged by the Maryland State Department of Education for not meeting certain achievement goals. The Somerset County Board of Education said a merger is still a possibility, but it just will not happen as soon as expected.
