ANNAPOLIS, Md. - It's a war of words between Maryland's governor and comptroller over the price of fuel.
Comptroller Peter Franchot calls Gov. Martin O'Malley's idea of a gas tax hike a "crushing blow" to the state's middle class, as well as small and big businesses. The governor is proposing a 6 percent increase on gas for three consecutive years.
On Wednesday, O'Malley responded by describing Franchot as a flip-flop politician, saying, "He's kind of our version of Mitt Romney. He's happy to take opposite sides to every issue and has throughout his career."
"I can't believe we're doing this to our economy when we're in such a fragile state of recovery," Franchot said.
O'Malley said he welcomes the debate; Franchot hopes the debate is tabled for another year.
