DOVER, Del.- In a public meeting held Wednesday, the Capital School District Board approved a 5 percent increase for administrative employee salaries.
Last August the board voted for the increase in a closed session meeting. Margaret McKay said she recognized the board violated the public notice laws and she sent a letter to Delaware's Attorney General.
"I'm not interested in the substantive nature of the vote," she said. "That's for the citizens and taxpayers of the school district to decide. I'm only interested that they follow proper procedure and I'm here tonight to see that they do that."
The Delaware Attorney General's Office sent a letter to the board requesting it to rectify the situation and in a January meeting the board decided to vote publicly.
On Wednesday night board held a public meeting and approved the salary increase in a 3-2 vote.
"We believe that parity in salary should be our main focus," said board member Kiran Clements. "All of our surrounding districts have higher starting salaries and we don't and we feel that it impacts our recruitment and retention in the district. We're also looking ahead so that when we have people retiring in the district that we want to have the best."
Clements said the money will not affect the taxpayers because it comes from local funds.
