COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) - A new report prepared for Maryland lawmakers highlights the positive impact of immigration on the state.
The University of Maryland released the report by the Commission to Study the Impact of Immigrants in Maryland on Thursday.
While the report notes some lower-income immigrants and their children may receive more in services than they pay in taxes, it encourages lawmakers to take a longer term view of the issue. The authors note that while the typical 18-year-old is a net cost to society today, that does not necessarily mean they will be over their entire life.
The authors also noted that in suburban Washington, average household income and property values rose rapidly over the same period as increases in unauthorized immigration.
