SALISBURY, Md. – Salisbury University head coach Doug Fleetwood has been named the Maryland State Association of Baseball Coaches (MSABC) College Coach of the Year for his efforts during the 2011 season, the organization announced recently.
Fleetwood guided the Sea Gulls to the third NCAA Division III College World Series in school history and a 34-14 record. SU used four consecutive wins in elimination games in the NCAA south regional in Millington, Tenn., to advance to the World Series.
It is the second time Fleetwood has earned College Coach of the Year honors from the MSABC. He also received the award following his first season at Salisbury after taking the Sea Gulls to the 2001 World Series.
Frostburg State University pitcher Greg Ross will receive organization's honor for Amateur Player of the Year.
The awards will be presented at the MSABC banquet on Feb. 18 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets are a $65 donation and are available by clicking here. Fleetwood, however, will not be in attendance as he will be leading the Sea Gulls in a doubleheader at Galluadet University that day.
Since 1981, the MSABC's goal is to improve baseball in the state of Maryland and has honored people from around the state for their outstanding accomplishments in the game.
