Md. Senator Wants to Ban Teen Tanning

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md. - Maryland state Sen. Jamie Raskin has presented a bill that would put a ban on underage use of indoor tanning beds. He believes children under the age of 18 do not have the capability to process the dangers of ultraviolet rays.

Currently, children under 18 can use the beds as long as they have parental consent.

David Thomas, who owns Tropic Fever Tanning in Laurel, Del., said moderation is the key to safe tanning.

"The dangers from tanning come from overexposure," he said. "What safe tanning salons try to do is monitor your exposure time. You want to be responsible about it.  Moderate sun exposure produces the vitamin D that is necessary for you to be healthy."
