Del. Corrections Commissioner Discusses Budget

Carl Danberg Carl Danberg

DOVER, Del. (AP)- The head of the Department of Corrections says his agency likely won't see significant savings from efforts to reform Delaware's criminal justice system unless those reforms substantially reduce the prison population.

Carl Danberg is a member of a task force created last year to look at factors driving prison population growth, and to recommend options to generate savings, increase public safety and reduce recidivism.

But in presenting his proposed fiscal 2013 budget to the legislature's Joint Finance Committee on Monday, Danberg noted that roughly two-thirds of DOC's budget is for personnel costs. He said the only way for his department to see significant saving from justice system reforms is if the prison population drops to such an extent that it would allow DOC to close 1 of its facilities.
