PITTSVILLE, Md.- Authorities say a Pittsville woman was arrested for drunk driving after she led police on a chase that ended on Route 50 near Willards.

The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office said that shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, deputies received a report of an erratic driver entering Wicomico County on westbound Route 50 in the Willards area. The report stated that the vehicle in question was swerving widely while travelling in excess of the speed limit. According to investigators, an Ocean City police vehicle was attempting to stop the vehicle, but this vehicle refused to pull over. A Wicomico sheriff's deputy located the vehicle being pursued, and managed to utilize his own vehicle to yield to the side of the road.

Police said that upon coming in contact with the driver, identifed as 30-year-old Melanie Rivers, the deputy detected a strong odor of alcohol emanating from within the vehicle and from Rivers herself. Police said the deputy attempted to administer sobriety tests but Rivers could not complete them, at one point admitting that she could not do the requested tests because she had been drinking.

Rivers was placed under arrest and transported her to the Maryland State Police barrack for further processing and a breath test. Police said Rivers blew a .31 BAC, which is more than three times the legal limit.

Following her arrest on the charge of driving under the influence per se, Rivers was ordered held in the Wicomico County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bond.
