LAUREL, Del.- Ongoing violence and gang-related crime has led Mayor John Schwed and the Laurel Town Council to approve an emergency curfew for the Carvel Gardens Apartment Complex and Annex, beginning Wednesday night.
While the emergency curfew is in place, non-residents will not allowed to be outside on the Carvel Gardens property between the hours of 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. The curfew will remain in effect until further notice. People caught violating the curfew could face a $500 fine and 30 days in jail if convicted.
Laurel police said the curfew is needed because of several violent incidents that have taken place in the last three months. Detective Sgt. Derrick Calloway of the Laurel PD said it is hoped that the curfew will help stem gang-related activities in town.
"From what we're gathering from other agencies outside of Delaware, is some of these people we're dealing with have been validated in other agencies as gang members," Calloway said.
