NEW ORLEANS –
On the heels of becoming the first indoor champion in the history of the
Capital Athletic Conference, the Salisbury University women's track
& field team reached a new high on Wednesday
as it ascended to the No. 34 spot in the nation when the rankings were
released by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association.
The Sea Gulls also reached the No. 2 spot in the Mideast Region,
trailing only Johns Hopkins University; both rankings are the highest
the team has achieved during the tenure of Head Coach Jim Jones.
The men's team climbed as high as No. 12 during the 2010 season.
This past Sunday,
at the inaugural CAC indoor championships, the Salisbury women broke
seven school records and collected eight event championships.
Part of Salisbury's strong showing in the rankings is the shot put performance of junior Chelsea Tavik. Her school-record mark of 46' 0.75" in the event this season is the third-best mark in the nation.
The USTFCCCA rankings are complied by mathematical formulae based on
national descending order lists and data taken from previous seasons.
The purpose and methodology of the rankings is to create an index that
showcases the teams that have the best potential of achieving the top
spots in the national-team race.
The Sea Gulls will return to the site of the CAC championships this Sunday as they travel to the George Mason Winter Games in Fairfax, Va.
