EASTON, Md.- Mandatory recycling is on its way to Easton. The town council made it official this week when they voted to adopt a citywide recycling program.
Some people in town say it is about time Easton got with the program.
"I think it's about time Easton caught up with the rest of the country," said Katherine Cripps of Easton. "Many places have been recycling successfully for a long time."
Cripps, who has been recycling in Easton for years, said curbside recycling will make it much more convenient and time-efficient.
"Many of us who recycle go through extra trouble and it would be really nice if we had it curbside," Cripps said.
The term mandatory recycling isn't music to everyone's ears in Easton. Some people are worried about the cost. The exact cost to recycle is still being hammered out by council. It looks like it will be around $6 a month.
Debbie Schelhouse of Easton said it is too much.
"Our taxes are a little bit too much now," Schelhouse said. "Not everyone recycles and I just think it's a little bit too far."
Then there are those who say recycling should be optional.
"I think it should be your choice," said Dwayne Drury, also of Easton.
Mandatory curbside recycling is scheduled to start July 1. Residents who refuse to recycle will be subject to violations and fines.
