Showdown Looms on Budget in Va. Senate

Posted:

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A showdown is brewing in the Virginia Senate over the state budget.

The Senate and the House of Delegates are scheduled to vote on their respective versions of the state's two-year, $85 billion spending plan Thursday.

Most of the drama is in the evenly divided Senate, where Democrats want a power-sharing arrangement in exchange for their support on the budget.

Republican Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling cast the tie-breaking vote to put Republicans in charge of committees when the session opened, but the state Constitution doesn't allow him to vote on the budget. That means the Senate spending plan could die on a tie vote.
