ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP)- The National Park Service says the popular Captain John Smith Geotrail is expanding on the lower Eastern Shore.
Eleven geocaches are being added from Pocomoke to the Virginia Eastern Shore National Wildlife Refuge on the tip of the Delmarva peninsula. The expanded trail debuts on Saturday in Onancock, Va. at the Historic Onancock School. It is a free event.
The trail was originally launched last June with 40 sites on five Chesapeake Rivers. Officials say more than 5,000 visits have been recorded since then.
Geocaching is a type of treasure hunt in which participants use hand-held GPS devices to plot map coordinates and find a hidden "cache."
In addition to the National Park Service, sponsors include the Chesapeake Conservancy and the Maryland Geocaching Society.
"I think what's fun about geocaching is it takes you to locations you've never been to before, said Susan Kelley, director of Maryland Geocaching Society. "The adventure, the hunt itself - finding the geocache."
