Dover, DE - The Delaware State University women's
tennis team has advanced to the MEAC Tournament semi-finals after a 4-2
come-from-behind quarterfinal win over Florida A&M at the Millbrook
Tennis Center today.
DSU,
the No. 1 North seed in the tournament, will face either
Bethune-Cookman (No. 2 South seed) or Howard (No. 3 North) in the
semifinals on Saturday. The championship match in the single elimination
tournament is set for Sunday (Apr. 15) at 9:00 a.m.
The
Hornets won four of the five completed singles contests to earn the win
after falling behind in the match. Florida A&M took two of three
doubles contest to win the doubles points. The Rattlers also captured
the No. 2 singles match to open up a 2-0 lead in the match.
Delaware
State's Ksenia Kozlova was victorious in the No. 1 singles match 6-1,
6-4, while Marina Sicic posted a solid 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 3.
2012
MEAC Rookie-of-the-Year Vanja Andonova won her 16th straight match with a
6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 4. Maja Banas was a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 5
singles.
Andonova also teamed with Cristina Andrade to give the Hornets their lone doubles win 8-3 in the No. 3 match.
Andrade
won the first set of the No. 6 singles contest 6-2. The second set was
tied 5-5 when it was stopped after DSU won the match.
The Hornets,
under first-year head coach David Marshall, have won a school-record 16
straight matches to improve to 16-2 this season. DSU also caputured its
first MEAC North title and No. 1 tournament seed this season.
This
the second straight year that Delaware State has advanced to the MEAC
Tournament semi-finals. The Hornets won the first tournament match in
team history against Bethune-Cookman before falling to eventual champion
South Carolina State in the semis in 2011.
South Carolina State is seeking its eighth straight MEAC tournament championship this year.
