Some Donate Money to Uncle Sam

Posted: Updated:

SALISBURY, Md.- Some people give more than what is asked for to Uncle Sam.  Since 1996, more than $30 million has been donated to the United States government by some who believe it is their civic duty.

"I would never do that. There's no way," said Buddy Bellone of Pocomoke City. "I mean, I work hard for the money and in times like this every little bit helps; $20 is $20 I could use for something else."

In the 2011-2012 fiscal year, more than $3.5 million was given to the U.S. Treasury's Bureau of Public Debt  (http://www.treasurydirect.gov/govt/reports/pd/gift/gift.htm).  That is the most in more than 10 years.  The people that do donate extra designate the money to go toward the national deficit.
