DOVER, Del. (AP) - The head of a coalition of schools dedicated to an education improvement plan that helped lay the foundation for Delaware's Race to The Top program has been nominated as the state's new education secretary.
Gov. Jack Markell on Friday nominated Mark Murphy, executive director of the Vision Network, to succeed Lillian Lowery as education secretary. Lowery recently was chosen as Maryland's new education secretary.
As head of the Vision Network, Murphy has worked with several public schools in Delaware to help implement the state's Race to the Top reforms and the state's common core standards initiative.
Murphy began his career as a teacher in Maryland and also has worked as an elementary school assistant principal and principal.
