DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware's transportation secretary says his agency is implementing new reforms in the wake of an audit that found shoddy record keeping and financial management practices.
Among other things, the outside audit released Friday found that DelDOT has been sitting on 25 uncashed checks dating back to 2003 and totaling almost $161,000.
The review also found scores of cases in which DelDOT faces the potential loss of land rights because right-of-way dedications and permanent easements were not properly recorded.
DelDOT Secretary Shailen Bhatt said Friday that the agency will be implementing a new centralized document management system for record keeping, as well as a cashiering system to keep better track of financial transactions. It also is taking steps to recover the money from the uncashed checks and protect its land rights.
