CAMBRIDGE, MD. - Workers had to battle mother nature today. Strong winds made it challenging for the crews to finish up some sandblasting on this World War I Memorial Fountain.
"The
wind, definitely the wind because we have a tent so the sand doesn't
blow all over the place and the wind just keeps tearing it down, it
makes it difficult," said Jose Gomez of East Coating and Construction.
Construction
on the World War I memorial fountain is underway and strong winds
were a concern at Long Wharf Marina but they are not the only issue. The
Cambridge Rotary Club needs $50,000 to fix the fountain.
They
are close but still need to raise more. Even still, the Rotary Club
remains optimistic. They say the more money they raise, the more they
can do to give this old fountain new life. "We are getting a lot
of volunteers but really to finish it off we need to get to that
$50,000 mark," said Cambridge Rotary Club President-Elect Jeff Hubbard.
The
Rotary Club does not want to stop with the fountain. In fact, the club
says it has an even bigger plan. "We don't want to just fix the fountain
and walk away," said Hubbard. "We want to make sure it's handicap
accessible, we want to make sure this area is people friendly and we
want to put some benches around here and we want to make it a place
where people come and enjoy this fountain."
It's
an aggressive battle plan centered around restoring this WWI Memorial
Fountain. Workers are starring down the barrel of a tight deadline. The
Rotary Club plans to unveil the newly-restored fountain Memorial Day
Weekend.
