SALISBURY, Md.- A Salisbury man is behind bars on attempted murder and related charges following accusations that he tried to run down a jogger with his pickup truck.
The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office said that shortly before 7 a.m. Wednesday, March 9, a deputy responded to a reported altercation that had occurred on the 31000 block of Ward Road.
Police said that upon arrival, the deputy learned that 50-year-old Craig S. Jones, who lives in the area, became enraged when a jogger attempted to pepper spray Jones' dog after the dog chased him.
According to investigators, the jogger stated that Jones jumped into a pickup truck and began chasing him while threatening to kill him. The jogger stated that he left the roadway in an attempt to run away from Jones, who followed him and ended up crashing into a tree. Jones managed to dislodge his vehicle from the tree and continued chasing the jogger again, police said. Authorities said that during this chase, Jones ran over and damaged a tombstone in a private cemetery.
Police said the jogger believed that Jones was trying to run him over and was in fear for his life. According to police, the deputy observed damage to the tree that coincided with serious front-end damage to the truck of Jones. That, along with lengthy tire marks left when the truck of Jones went off-road, corroborated the jogger's account, police noted.
The deputy arrested Jones for attempted first- and second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, disorderly conduct, disturbing the peace/hinder passage, two counts of malicious destruction of property-value of $500 or less, destroy funerary object and disorderly conduct in a cemetery.
Jones is being held without bond in the Wicomico County Detention Center.
