SALISBURY, Md. - A Salisbury jogger tells police he ran for his life Wednesday morning.
The Wicomico County Sheriff's Office says the jogger's accused attacker, 50-year-old Craig S. Jones of Salisbury, now faces attempted murder, disorderly conduct and malicious destruction charges.
According to charging documents, a dog started chasing the jogger along Mt. Hermon Church Road, when the jogger used pepper spray on the dog. The dog's owner, Jones, then got into his car, yelled at and started to chase the jogger, according to charging documents. Deputies said the jogger fled, and when he reappeared 20 minutes later from behind a tree, Jones again yelled, "You're a dead man!" The jogger said he was in fear of his life.
Police said Jones circled his car around a family cemetery to try and strike the jogger, a Salisbury University professor. Investigators said Jones ran over and damaged a tombstone and other items.
Jones' wife told WBOC she believes the incident has been blown out of proportion.
"This dog is like our child," said Jones' wife. "He didn't try to kill anybody."
But the neighbor who owns the cemetery is also upset.
"We don't want anything to happen to our neighbor," said Nancy Ward. "But this person did not have any respect for a cemetery at all."
Jones is being held without bond in the Wicomico County Detention Center. His preliminary hearing is set for June 7.
