RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Approximately 1,800 Virginia farmers will be surveyed next month so federal agriculture officials can get a clearer picture of the nation's crops.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service will reach out to Virginia growers by mail, phone or in person during the first two weeks of June.
This is a follow-up to reports from farmers in March. Then they said they had planned to plant more acres of corn, soybeans and peanuts this season and cut back on cotton. USDA is now seeking a tally of what has been actually planted.
Virginia's commissioner of agriculture and consumer services, Matthew J. Lohr, says the information is critical for growers, suppliers and others.
