Va. Beach Police Join Light Rail Opposition

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP)- Police officers in Virginia Beach have joined the opposition against extending Norfolk's light rail system to the city.

Media outlets report that members of the Police Benevolent Association and the Virginia Beach Police Supervisors Association voted Thursday to oppose the proposal. Members of the firefighters union took a similar vote earlier.

Union officials say the city shouldn't spend money to bring The Tide to Virginia Beach when it can't afford to give employees pay raises or hire more police officers or firefighters.

Mayor Will Sessoms says much of the project's $807 million cost would be paid for by the federal and state governments.
