PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -With the National Collegiate Athletic Association Track and Field Preliminary Round taking place May 24-26, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Outdoor Track and Field team has several student-athletes with national and world recognized performances competing in the prelims.
Andre Walsh, Ackeem Smith, Lenora Guion-Firmin and Vanessa Henry all have nationally and world recognized performances.
The four UMES student-athletes are also part of the 10 total Hawks competing in the NCAA prelims.
Walsh has the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches of America 20th best 400-meter hurdles time in the country. Walsh also holds a school record, and listed on the International Association of Athletics Federation list for his 50.29 time in the event. Walsh ran his UMES record-setting time at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championships (May 3-5), leading the Hawks to a fourth place finish this season.
Smith has the 22nd best time in the 110-meter hurdles, and has one of the fastest times in the event with his time of 13.79 seconds. He is also a UMES record holder in the 110mH following competition in the MEAC Championship.
The USTFCCCA has Henry ranked 16th in the country, and she is seventh entering the NCAA prelims in the shot put. Henry holds the UMES record in the shot put with her toss of 16.48 meters, which also places her on the IAAF list.
Guion-Firmin ran the 10th fastest time in the USTFCCCA rankings in the 400-meter dash, and currently placed fifth in the NCAA prelim rankings. She also is ranked in the top 50 of the world rankings.
UMES will send 10 Hawks to compete in the preliminary round of the outdoor track and field championships. Geranda Williams, Cynthia Anais, Owen Cain, Zavior Brown and Rico Taylor will also compete in the NCAA prelims.
The NCAA Championships will be held June 6-9 in Des Moines, Iowa.
