DOVER, Del. and TOWSON, Md.- About the same number of Delaware residents will leave home this Memorial Day weekend as did last year, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic.
The auto club predicts nearly 100,000 people in Delaware will travel 50 miles or more between Thursday and Monday. Of those traveling in Delaware, AAA Mid-Atlantic said 90 percent plan to drive to their destination.
In nearby Maryland, 721,000 residents of that state are predicted travel this Memorial Day weekend, a 1.4 percent increase compared to the number of Marylanders who traveled in 2011. The majority of Maryland travelers, nearly 646,000, are forecasted to take to the roads, reflecting a 1.4 percent increase compared to the 2011 holiday. Driving still remains the preference for travelers as AAA Mid-Atlatnic said 90 percent of Marylanders are predicted to take to the roads to reach their destination.
"Despite improving- yet not robust- economic conditions and household budgets being squeezed the first few months of the year due to rising gas prices, slightly more Marylanders are forecasted to get away for the holiday weekend compared to last year," said Ragina C. Averella, manager of public and government affairs for AAA Mid-Atlantic.
The auto club projects 34.8 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more during the holiday weekend, an increase of 1.2 percent- or about 500,000 travelers - from the 34.3 million people who traveled one year ago.
