SALISBURY, Md.- Wicomico County Executive Rick Pollitt received notification Thursday that the state of Maryland will contribute $10 million toward the construction of a new Bennett Middle School for the 2013 fiscal year.

Pollitt said he hopes the state will contribute the same amount for the next three years.

"This is the last piece of the puzzle that we need," he said. "We've put it in our budget as far as the county contribution goes and this significant investment by the state will actually let us go forward and build Bennett Middle on schedule."

Wicomico County has already committed to more than $33 million in funds toward the new school, which will cost in the neighborhood of $70 million. Pollitt expressed a lot of gratitude to Del. Norman Conway (D-Wicomico and Worcester), chairman of the House Appropriations Committee,  who informed county officials that the State Board of Public Works approved more than $10.8 million in school construction funding.

Pollitt said construction on the new middle school should begin sometime early in 2013.
