DOVER, Del. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Tom Carper has formally filed for re-election to the Senate.

Carper filed his candidate papers Friday, saying he wants to continue serving in the Senate and that he is focused on continuing to work on improving the economy and reducing the deficit.

Carper faces a primary challenge from fellow Democrat Keith Spanarelli of Smyrna, a political newcomer.

The Delaware GOP has nominated businessman Kevin Wade to challenge Carper in November.

Dewey Beach businessman Alex Pires announced during a cable television appearance earlier this week that he will run as an independent for the Senate seat currently held by Carper.

Carper, a former two-term governor and congressman, defeated incumbent Republican Bill Roth to claim the Senate seat in 2000.
