FRUITLAND, Md.- Authorities say a 42-year-old man had to be rushed to the hospital for treatment of injuries sustained in an early Monday house fire in Fruitland.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office said the blaze broke out shortly before 4 a.m. at a one-story single-family home located at 214 West Cedar Lane.

It took 25 firefighters from the Fruitland and Salisbury fire departments approximately 10 minutes to get the fire under control.

Investigators said the home's occupant, Mark Houlihan, was able to escape the fire but suffered smoke inhalation and first-degree burns to his head and hands. He was transported by Fruitland EMS to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury and then flown to Bayview Medical Burn Center in Baltimore for further treatment.

The fire caused an estimated $30,000 in damage to the home and another $2,000 in damage to its contents, authorities said.

A smoke alarm was present but not operational at the time of the fire, according to investigators. The fire was determined to have started in the living room. However, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
