HAMPTON, Va. (AP) - A local emergency has been declared for areas in Hampton affected by a tornado.
The tornado that struck Friday caused more than $4.3 million in damage. But city officials tell media outlets that they don't believe the damage will meet the required levels for state or federal assistance.
City Council will consider at its next meeting a proposal to waive permit fees for residents repairing damage.
Virginia Secretary of Public Safety Marla Decker and state emergency management coordinator Michael Cline planned to view the damage on Monday. They also planned to visit Petersburg, which also was hit by a tornado.
