HARRINGTON, Del.- Authorities say a motorcyclist was left seriously injured following a collision with an SUV north of Harrington early Tuesday evening.
According to police, the accident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. as 16-year-old McKenzie L. Ivory of Harrington was driving a 2005 Jeep Liberty westbound on Winkler Road and stopped at the intersection with U.S. Route 13. Troopers said Ivory proceeded into the intersection after the stop and drove into the path of a pair of motorcycles heading northbound on Route 13 in the left lane.
Police said one of the motorcycles, operated by 26-year-old Jason L. Diehl of Harrington, struck the driver's side of the Jeep, resulting in Diehl being ejected onto the roadway. The other motorcycle was just behind Diehl in the same lane but was able to avoid the crash.
Investigators said Diehl, who was wearing a helmet, was removed from the scene by EMS and transported to Kent General Hospital in Dover for treatment of serious injuries. Police said Ivory, who was properly restrained, was not injured in the crash.
The northbound and southbound lanes of Route 13 near the scene of the crash were closed for three hours as the crash was investigated and cleared. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
