CHESAPEAKE, Va. (AP)- The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles says it did not misinterpret an Iraq War veteran's license plate that it revoked for being offensive.
The DMV says in court papers that Sean Bujno's personalized plate, "ICUHAJI," carried the same connotation as his original plate request, "HAJIKLR." The DMV had denied that request.
Bujno is appealing the DMV's April revocation of his license plate.
Bujno's attorney, Andrew Meyer, says that Bujno's original request for a personalized plate is irrelevant. Meyer says the plate revocation violated Bujno's free-speech and due process rights.
A hearing on Bujno's appeal is set for Aug. 21 in Chesapeake Circuit Court.
