Food Bank of Delaware Helps Hungry Kids

Posted: Updated:

MILFORD, Del.- Summer is a hard time for food-insecure children because the free and reduced-price lunches they receive at school are not available.

But that is where the Food Bank of Delaware steps in. The food bank has set up a summer program to help kids get nutritious food. Local schools and daycare center receive lunches and often breakfast to help fill empty stomachs.

Maria Joseph, director of Primeras Passos, said the meals are a big help during the summer months.

"I've had parents say, 'You know, I'm sorry Maria. I didn't pack a lunch.' You know this helps at home, especially during the summertime," she said.

Kim Kostes with the Food Bank of Delaware says meals are packed five days a week and delivered around the state.

Despite helping nearly 10,000 children each summer, Kostes says there are still kids going hungry.

"During the school months they don't know about the summer program so we're really looking to build awareness and let families know these free meals are available, that there are sites all through out the state," she said.
