LAUREL, Del.- A horse rescue group has until March to raise around $130,000 in order to buy a 30-plus acre plot of land near Georgetown.
Changing Fates Equine Rescue of Delaware, Inc., is a haven for abused, neglected and unwanted horses. It has helped more than 120 horses since it was founded in 2005. Currently CFERD rents a 7 and 1/2-acre plot near Laurel, but this small plot is at capacity. Eight other horses are on a waiting list for the rescue group.
"An acre per horse is pretty much ideal," Karen Speake, a CFERD board member, said. "We have exceeded that and we are having to turn away quite a few horses that are in need because we can no longer take in more horses."
Recently CFERD was awarded a $135,000 grant to help it expand, but the group has to raise the other half.
CFERD board member Robin Weinkam told WBOC owning the 30-plus acre property would allow them to rescue twice as many horses as they currently do.
"We need to expand from where we are," Weinkam said. "We won't have to pay rent anymore, and we'll be able to bring in twice as many horses. We'll have more grass and more pasture area."
