DOVER, Del.- According to the American Cancer Society, more than 250 cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in Delaware this year. However, state lawmakers are hoping to curb the amount of skin damage kids receive with House Bill 400.
The bill would ban kids under the age of 18 from tanning beds.
Michael Thompson owns Make Waves in Milford and hair and tanning salon. He says there have been more and more tanning regulations recently and that's part of why he's getting out of the tanning business.
"The tanning business has dropped off dramatically and eventually I will just be doing hair and not any tanning at all," he said.
Debra Guthrie has suffered the effects of the sun and said tanning beds are not any better.
"I've never been to a tanning bed but I've had skin cancer twice and it's a very serious problem and I think that's a good step to protect the young people. They're really not aware of what the problem is with tanning salons," she said.
If passed, the bill will also force tanning salons to post warning about the dangers of the tanning process.
