CENTREVILLE, Md.— Maryland State Police say a traffic stop in Queen Anne's County led to the arrests of a teenage drunk driver and his two drunk teen passengers, and the seizure of more than 170 cans of beer.
The incident reportedly occurred shortly after 6 p.m., when a trooper pulled over a speeding vehicle on eastbound Route 50 near Nesbit Road in Grasonville. Police said the trooper made contact with the driver, 19-year-old Luke Schriefer of Essex, and detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from Schriefer's breath and person. The trooper conducted field sobriety tests and arrested Schriefer on DUI charges.
Investigators said the two passengers, a 17-year-old Essex girl and a 17-year-old Pasadena girl, identified themselves as adults and admitted to drinking in the vehicle. According to police, the trooper administered preliminary breath tests and both girls were found to have alcohol in their systems.
The girls were taken into custody and charged by juvenile referral for alcohol consumption, making false statements to troopers, and hindering a police investigation. The girls were transported to the MSP Centreville Barrack for processing and were later released to the custody of their parents.
Police said a search of the vehicle for additional alcohol uncovered approximately 171 cans of beer and six bottles of liquor with an estimated value of more than $400. The alcohol was disposed of on-scene.
