Sussex County's Adopted Budget to Return $1 Million to Taxpayers

Updated:

GEORGETOWN, Del. – The Sussex County Council has unanimously decided to adopt a new budget that will return about $1 million to taxpayers.

The new $121.1 million budget will feature a tax credit available to county property owners who are up-to-date on their property taxes. The credit is valued at 3.5 cents per each $100 of assessed value.

The credit was made possible by a surplus in the 2011 budget. The new budget will go into effect for the 2013 fiscal year.

Sussex County's budget is also reported to include a $8-$15 annual increase in service charges for customers living in county sewer districts. There will also be a 2.25 percent cost-of-living adjustment. County officials said dental and vision reimbursement, as well as vacations and sick days, will remain intact.

According to officials, the adopted budget is $19 million less than the previous one. This is reportedly a result of high spending in the 2011-2012 year to finish major. Officials also said that this budget has been developed using the principles of small spending.
