Delaware to Fine Slow Drivers

Posted: Updated:

DOVER, Del.-Delaware lawmakers are hoping House Bill 140 will curb slow driving and road rage.

The bill imposes fines on drivers who are going under the speed limit in the left lane.

First-time offenders can expect a fine of at least $28 and could go up to $230.

Slow drivers are a sore subject for Tony Pratt. He drives back and forth between Lewes and Dover for work.

"There are a lot of days you just can't get past traffic that's moving very slowly in the left lane," he said. "It backs up traffic for miles and it unfortunately irritates people and people get very aggressive."

Pratt is all for the fines but he worries if they will be enforced.

"If the enforcement's not there people will ignore it," he said. "I see the cellphone bill went through but I see a lot of people on cellphones every day."

Legislators are hoping the bill will get people out of the left lane but Cynthia Brooks does not want anyone telling her how to drive.

"I think that you should be able to go the speed as long as you're going within the speed limit. Don't make people go faster if they don't want to go faster and leave them alone," she said.

Slow driving repeat offenders could receive fines of up to $575 per offense.
