Va. Prosecutor Seeks Probe of Turkey Abuse Claims

RIDGEWAY, Va. (AP) - Henry County's prosecutor has requested an investigation of animal cruelty allegations following an accident involving a truck hauling turkeys.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals says witnesses reported seeing workers jump on live turkeys and throw birds against the side of the truck after it overturned on U.S. 220 on June 14.

PETA also says turkeys were left in the truck in hot weather for hours after the wreck.

The group made the allegations in a letter sent to Commonwealth's Attorney Bob Bushnell.

Bushnell said that he asked the Virginia State Police to investigate after he received PETA's letter Tuesday.

Bushnell says he wants the investigation to determine whether there's evidence of "gratuitous cruelty."
