SALISBURY, Md.— Delmarva Power officials say they have obtained approval from the Maryland Public Service Commission to implement Combined Heat and Power for customers this summer.
The program's highly innovative energy-efficiency objective encourages the use of CHP, the generation of electric and thermal energy from a single-fuel source such as natural gas, to help meet aggressive EmPOWER Maryland goals by reducing the need for power-grid electricity. A natural gas-driven engine, when coupled with a generator, produces electricity and produces waste heat via exhaust gas which can be captured to produce steam and hot water for heating and use in commercial or industrial facilities.
Delmarva Power is developing a Request for Quotes and application process to recruit potential CHP projects within its service area beginning in mid-July and encourages vendors and customers in Maryland to begin plans to take full advantage of the program.
Approved CHP projects must be designed to use full generation capacity on the customer's site and meet all appropriate environmental regulations. Incentives include an upfront payment of $250 per kilowatt to offset installation and engineering costs with additional production incentives set at 7 cents per kilowatt-hour for an 18-month period following the startup of the CHP system.
