Ocean City Businesses Prepare for a Mid-Week 4th of July

Posted: Updated:

OCEAN CITY, Md.-  Independence Day falls on Wednesday this year, which means some businesses in Ocean City could suffer.

Susan Jones, executive director of the Ocean City Hotel-Motel-Restaurant Association said, "We don't really like when it's in the middle of the week, because it's not quite as strong as if it were on a weekend. When the Fourth of July does fall on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday, it's really busy and that's the peak of the entire season."

Last year, according to Ocean City officials, the resort town had more that 350,000 people pass through during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.  That was the most since 2003.

Some businesses believe things will work out just fine.

Nick Feickert, a manager at Shenanigan's Irish Pub said, "the summer has been great so far and business has been solid and I don't really expect to see that much of a change for the Fourth of July this year.  I expect it to be pretty solid and for business to be almost as busy as it would be on a Friday or Saturday."

Bill Dreibelbis, owner of Quietstorm Surf Shop, said he is keeping his fingers crossed.

"We always hope for the best but during the middle of the week, sometimes it can be an issue on the weekend. You may not have the peaks of a great great weekend, but by the end of the week it seems to average out. We're hoping the first eight days of July are strong."
