GREENWOOD, Del.- Ten linemen from Delaware Electric Cooperative will assist utility crews in Virginia this week, the co-op announced. Work to restore power continues in that state after powerful storms swept across the Mid-Atlantic on Friday night.
According to DEC spokesman Jeremy Tucker, six linemen left Delaware on Monday and four more will head to Shenandoah Electric Cooperative on Tuesday where, as of Monday afternoon, more than 6,400 people were still without power. Crews are expected to spend several days in the hardest hit areas of Virginia rebuilding lines damaged by a line of unusually severe thunderstorms, Tucker said.
Electric cooperatives from Virginia requested assistance from Delaware on Saturday, but Tucker said DEC crews were busy restoring power to members in Kent and Sussex counties. At the height of the storm, more than 14,000 DEC members were without power. Tucker said that by 7:30 p.m. Saturday, co-op crews had restored power to all members.
Tucker noted that if severe weather leads to widespread outages in Delaware this week, the 10 DEC linemen will be brought back home.
