SALISBURY, Md.— Because of the extreme temperatures, Wicomico County health officials have announced they are opening a cooling center at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center located at 500 Glen Ave. in Salisbury. The cooling center, located in Flanders rooms 5, 6, and 7, will be open Thursday, July 5 through Sunday, July 8, from 10 a.m.-8 p.m.

Cooling center visitors will need to bring their own food, beverages and medications. Bottled water will be available but no pets will be permitted.

Officials are urging residents to remain indoors in air-conditioned environments as temperatures are expected to rise into the triple digits over the next few days.

"Until temperatures return to normal, we are asking residents to avoid all outside activities, drink lots of water, stay cool, and check on neighbors," said Wicomico County Health Officer Lori Brewster. "If air conditioning is not available, residents should consider visiting the local mall or cooling center. It is important during times like these to look after one another and help ensure each other's safety."

Individuals needing transportation may contact Shore Transit at (443) 260-2300. For local and updated cooling center information, facts on heat-related illness, or additional tips on how to stay cool, visit the Wicomico County Health Department's website at www.wicomicohealth.org.
