MILTON, Del.- The Town of Milton has declared a water emergency effective 6 p.m. Saturday, July 7, and continuing until further notice. Officials said lawn-watering and other irrigation activities, except for vegetable gardens, within the town limits shall be restricted in the following manner:
- No lawn watering or irrigation of lawns, trees, and shrubbery shall be permitted from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. by any person or business.
- Homes and businesses with a street address ending with an odd number may irrigate between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. on odd-numbered days.
- Homes and businesses with a street address ending with an even number may irrigate between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. on even-numbered days.
- The washing of vehicles with water supplied by the Town of Milton is prohibited, excepting the use of a commercial car washing facility
Mayor Clifford Newlands said this order has been issued so that domestic water consumption and required fire prevention capacity may be preserved. Officials said a violation of this order is punishable by a fine of not less than $50 per violation.
According to town authorities, the hot and dry weather has increased demand for water and the town's two water towers, with a combined capacity of 225,000-gallons provide a very limited reserve for domestic use and fire prevention.
The Mayor and Council urge all citizens to conserve on outdoor water use until further notice. Town officials said specific restrictions with regard to lawn watering and irrigation may be amended, as necessary, during the course of this weather-related event.
