Troopers said 32-year-old Marilene Shelton, also of Harrington, was driving west on Jackson Ditch Road in a 2001 Mercedes-Benz S430 when she struck the back of Beach's bicycle, causing him to be thrown onto the grass.

Beach was taken by emergency medical services to Kent General Hospital, before he was transferred to Christiana Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police said Shelton, who was properly restrained, was not injured in the crash.

The roadway was closed for around one hour after the crash while investigators inspected and cleared the scene.
