Marydel Man Killed in Crash

Posted: Updated:

MARYDEL, Del.— Delaware State Police say a Marydel man died in a late Sunday night car crash.

According to police, 33-year-old Shawn M. Bates was driving a 1996 Lexus ES300 southbound on Mahan Corner Road north of Westville Road at around 10:26 p.m., when he tried to negotiate a left curve while traveling at a high speed. Investigators said the Lexus went off the west side of the road, returned to the road, crossed both lanes of traffic, and hit a tree on the east side of the road.

Troopers said Bates was not properly restrained and was pronounced dead at the scene. The road was closed for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.

The DSP Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing the investigation.
