VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP)— A man who died while swimming at the oceanfront in Virginia Beach has been identified as a West Virginia resident.
Virginia Beach police said Monday that a lifeguard and bystanders pulled 43-year-old Dwight David Carpenter of Buckhannon, W.Va., out of the water after he appeared to be in distress. Efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.
The incident occurred Saturday afternoon. Police say Carpenter was visiting family members.
The medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.
